Salvation means change

You often hear evangelical Christians talk about the time when they were saved. Yet many fail to understand what a tremendous word they are using. To aid that understanding, we would like to suggest three dimensions of meaning that can be applied to the word saved, all of which are essential for the Christian life.

1. We can know that we have been saved from the past. We have been forgiven from all our sins and have become new creatures in Christ [see 2 Corinthians chapter 5 verse 17].

2. Salvation should be seen as something that is happening to us right now. Salvation is a process - we are not perfect from the day we are saved. God’s ongoing work in our lives is changing us day by day. It is always work in progress [see 2 Peter chapter 1 verses 3 to 8].

3. There is the promise that we will be saved tomorrow. Having that certainty in our lives means that by faith we can face the future with confidence, certain in the knowledge that whatever it brings there is nothing we need fear. In Romans chapter 8 verses 24 to 25, Paul puts it like this:

‘For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, then we eagerly wait for it with perseverance’.

Through hope we can be absolutely sure that Christ is coming again for us.
